Primary Succession: Begins in a completely lifeless area with NO SOIL (e.g., bare rock from a volcano).
Pioneer Species: Lichens and mosses physically break down rock to create the first thin layer of soil.
Secondary Succession: Occurs after a disturbance (fire, logging) where SOIL REMAINS. Recovers much faster.
Climax Community: A mature, stable, and highly diverse ecosystem in equilibrium.

Bare Rock
A volcanic eruption or retreating glacier has left behind completely bare, lifeless rock. There is no soil. Nothing can grow yet.
Primary vs Secondary Timeline
Primary succession takes hundreds to thousands of years because chemical weathering of rock to form soil is incredibly slow. Secondary requires only decades because the soil is ready.
