Migration Push/Pull Factors
AP Human Geography ยท Population & Migration
Why do people migrate?

Migration revolves around a localized assessment of conditions. According to Everett Lee's theory, migrants weigh Push vs. Pull factors before moving.

The Forces
  • Push Factors: Negative conditions driving people AWAY from a location (e.g., War, famine, unemployment).
  • Pull Factors: Positive incentives drawing people TO a new location (e.g., jobs, freedom, safety).
Intervening Forces

The journey isn't perfectly smooth. Obstacles (borders, oceans) hinder the move. Opportunities (finding a good job halfway) halt the move entirely.
