Freud's Psychosexual Stages
AP Psychology ยท Unit 7 Motivation, Emotion, Personality
Learning Objectives
5 Stages: Freud proposed psychosexual stages: Oral, Anal, Phallic, Latent, Genital. Fixation at any stage shapes adult personality.
Fixation: If needs are not met (or over-met) at a stage, libido remains "stuck" there, influencing adult behaviors and personality traits.
Oedipus/Electra: During the phallic stage, children develop unconscious sexual desires toward the opposite-sex parent (Oedipus/Electra complex).

Modern View: Freud's stages are historically important but largely unsupported by modern research. The AP exam tests your knowledge of the theory, not its validity. Compare with Erikson's psychosocial stages.
