American Revolution & Independence (1763โ€“1783)
AP US History ยท Period 3: 1754โ€“1800
Historical Context
After the French & Indian War (1754โ€“63), Britain imposed taxes and tightened control over the colonies. Colonists, influenced by Enlightenment ideas (Locke: natural rights, consent of the governed), increasingly resisted what they saw as tyranny.
Core Principle: "No taxation without representation" โ€” colonists argued Parliament had no right to tax them without elected representatives. Britain argued "virtual representation."
