Total Internal Reflection & Fiber Optics
Adjust angle of incidence and refractive indices to observe total internal reflection. Critical angle θc = arcsin(n₂/n₁). Snell's Law visualization.
WHAT IS TOTAL INTERNAL REFLECTION?
Total Internal Reflection (TIR) occurs when light travels from a more dense medium (higher refractive index ) into a less dense medium (lower refractive index ) at an angle greater than the **critical angle** . At this point, the light is entirely reflected back into the first medium, following the law of reflection. TIR is the fundamental principle behind fiber optics, which carry internet and medical imaging signals through thin strands of glass.
HOW TO USE THIS VISUALIZATION
1. **Select Media**: Choose materials with different indices of refraction (e.g., Water to Air).2. **Change Angle of Incidence**: Rotate the light source. Notice that as you approach , the refracted ray bends closer to the boundary.3. **Beyond the Critical Angle**: Observe that once , the refracted ray disappears and only a perfectly reflected ray remains.

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS
- Light only reflects partially in TIR (it reflects 100%, more efficiently than a mirror)
- Critical angle depends on the brightness of the light (it only depends on the refractive indices of the media)
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- TIR requires .
- At the critical angle, the angle of refraction is 90°.
- Beyond the critical angle, no light is refracted into the second medium.
- Fiber optics rely on continuous TIR along the core of the fiber.
PRACTICE QUESTIONS
Q1 (QUANTITATIVE): What is the critical angle for light traveling from glass () to air ()?
Show Answer & Explanation
Answer: 41.8°
Explanation: Using , we get . Thus .
Q2 (CONCEPTUAL): Does Total Internal Reflection occur when light travels from air into water?
Show Answer & Explanation
Answer: No
Explanation: TIR can ONLY occur when light travels from a higher refractive index to a lower one (). When entering a denser medium like water from air, the light bends toward the normal and will always have a refracted component.
